ET Online: What was it like making this movie - was it fun?

Chris Kattan: It was non-stop laughter for three months. It was great, with WILL [FERRELL] and MOLLY [SHANNON], it was really great working with them. And AMY HECKERLING and LORNE MICHAELS - it was a lot of fun. It was a great summer. We shot for about three months and drank a lot of Starbucks coffee in the mornings.

ETOL: So you helped in writing it and bringing these characters together?

Chris: Yes, Will and I and STEVE KOREN all wrote the script together.

ETOL: But you created these characters way back when you were in The Groundlings. Did you ever imagine that this would come to be a film?

Chris. Oh no, God no. That's probably why it came to be a film. If you ever have a thought in your mind like, "Yeah, this may eventually..." It won't happen.

ETOL: What were the differences from doing the skit than doing the feature?

Chris: A lot of things. I mean, you can obviously do the take again - that's one thing. But on ''Saturday Night Live,'' there's an energy to the show that has to do with the audience that's there at the show. But shooting the film, there's no audience. Nobody laughing, nobody to work with. And you have to do a lot less on film than you do on television. I mean, the same amount of energy with the dancing though.

ETOL: Well, now you guys never talk in the skits - you never have any dialogue. What was that like, having to do that in the movie?

Chris: Well, we just sort of filled in the blanks.

ETOL: So, you did improv. How does that help you in your acting?

Chris: My acne? Oh, acting! Well, it clears up - just make them laugh... No, that helps me because improvising - that's like the bottom line.

ETOL: Are you still a member of The Groundlings?

Chris: Yes, I am still a member. I've performed with them a couple times this summer. (looking behind him at the bar in the background) Do you like this bar? This is my bar. Bottles and bottles of everything you want, but they're all empty.

ETOL: Tell me about your true experience at the Roxbury.

Chris: It was very short. I was in a line and I got in, although I'm not quite sure how. I guess I knew somebody. I was in there, and it was very smoky, so I left.

ETOL: Is that where you came up with the characters?

Chris: No, it was off someone that Will and I saw at a bar once. So it wasn't actually at Roxbury. That's our little secret. It was actually a bar in Santa Monica. So we saw this guy at a bar, and he was going up to girls, doing that little thing, "Hey, you wanna dance. No? Okay." So we stood next to him, and we were copying him doing the exact same thing. The people that we were with thought it was funny and laughed. So we performed them on The Groundlings and then "Saturday Night Live." And then it became a hit.

ETOL: Okay, well describe your character for those that don't know him.

Chris: Okay, my name is Doug Butabi, and my brother's name is Steve Butabi. I guess I'm the smarter one of the two, but I'm not. I'm still an idiot. We're both idiots and losers, and we're virgins too.
